A goodie to sweeten the wait: ANTETYPE Color Picker

UPDATE: New Version available (1.4.1) with up / down arrow and scroll support.

Yes – we are still alive – and working hard on getting ANTETYPE in shape for the private beta that is scheduled to start in August! In the meantime, however, we decided to release a little part of ANTETYPE into the wild: We present you the ANTETYPE Color Picker.

Since choosing and working with colors is an important part of working with ANTETYPE, we decided that the standard Mac OS X color pickers are not sufficient for us. Fortunately Apple provides the possibility to extend the system with custom color pickers and that’s exactly what we have done.

When working with colors in a creative way, the HSB color system is often a much better choice than RGB, since it is modeled after human perception of color rather than technical representation. However, in implementation, RGB or Hex values are usually needed and while switching between different color pickers works it is quite a hassle. So we created a color picker that shows and allows editing of those color systems and representations within one view. Combined with a well-proven visual way of picking a color bast on HSB our color picker brings much-needed ease-of-use to the Apple system color picker.

The color picker is released as Freeware. Currently in beta state it already runs pretty stable and has been in internal use at ERGOSIGN for a while. Feel free to use the comment section on this blog to provide feedback.

Installation:

To install, please copy the AntetypeColorPicker.colorPicker file to the ColorPickers folder within your Library folder.

For now, the ColorPicker is only available for Intel processors and requires Mac OS 10.5+.

Thanks for making this color picker. One request : any chance to be able to choose the working color space (ICC profile) while picking a color ?

The color picker currently uses the standard calibrated color space that the other color pickers use, too. Allowing for different color profiles (or none) is something we have on our agenda. This can be a bit of a can of worms, though – so don’t expect anything in this direction very soon. Glad you like the color picker!

After placing the 1.0.1file in the /Library/ColorPickers folder, the console reports the following error (also tried it in ~/Library/ColorPickers and got the same error):

8/31/10 2:01:41 PM Numbers[2469] Custom ColorPicker class with name .DS_Store could not be loaded.

The Antetype color picker is great. I’ve struggled for several years with the standard MAC color picker not retaining my values when I use HSB mode. I even tested this by setting HSB values, seeing where the dot is on the wheel (but not clicking on the wheel), then quitting the application. When I reopened the application, both the dot and the HSB value moved. I figured out a work-around, but it is very time consuming. I tried this same test with the Antetype color picker and had success!!! Finally, a stable color picker for us MAC users!

Thanks for the kind comments. Stability of HSB values was indeed one of our goals, but as long as you’re using the OS X System Color Picker you’ll always have some problems with it, because the colors are stored as RGB internally and the conversion from RGB to HSV is just not stable.

Very awesome, great work! I’ve been looking for something like this specifically. Does anyone know of a tool that will allow you to create a palette color list (.clr file) besides the standard Apple one?

  • Thank you! Exactly what I was looking for, I’m used to the standard Photoshop color picker and I wanted to use it within other applications.

Many thanks for this. The color picker in OSX is awful, this makes it considerably more useful. Hero of the day.
